Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why use a Star Screen instead of a Trommel or Vibrating Screen Deck?
A. Star Screens differ from screens which rely on the passage of material through a punched plate, as the revolving star shafts create an ‘active star bed’ which has the benefit of breaking up wet and matted materials, thus ensuring more separation. The material is sufficiently agitated to allow more of the fines to pass through, and not allow them to be carried over with the oversize material. 

Q. How long do the stars last?
A. Obviously this depends on the material, but typically C&D Waste processors with average throughputs will not need to change any stars until at least two years after installation. Wood and compost screeners will experience much longer star wear. 

Q. There are other Star Screens available, why choose the Pearson?
A. Pearson offer the only machine available with both shaft spacing and speed control. This allows the operator to fine-tune the screening process without making any mechanical changes, and without stopping the machine to do it. Most other Star Screens offer only speed control. 

Q. Do I need to pre-shed or crush?
A. Generally speaking yes, as the Pearson Star Screen is designed to take input material up to 500mm (depending on density) and screen that down to between 10 & 50 mm, according to how the machine is adjusted. In C&D Waste the normal practice is to have a primary screen such as a Trommel, Taper-Slot Screen or Finger Screen. These machine take the first cut at approx. 50mm, leaving the Star Screen to tidy up the fines. 

Q. What about plastics and other light contaminates?
A. The Star Screen separates on size difference, thus lights contamination will carry over in to the undersize/oversize materials along with the screened product. These light contaminants can then be removed using a form of Density Separation such as an Air Knife or a purpose built Density Separator. Our sales office can advise on this subject in more detail.
